IT Systems Administrator

The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission (Commission) is seeking a motivated and innovative Systems Administrator to join the infrastructure team of its Information Technology department. The IT Department provides leadership in information technology with a focus on providing secure, reliable, and integrated technology solutions.

The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of dedicated, full-time systems administration experience. Experience working on technology in the water sector is desirable.  The successful candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical users.  The successful candidate must have the ability and willingness to work as part of a team that supports the work of the Commission’s Help Desk, Infrastructure, and Business Intelligence teams.  The IT department exists to support the work of the rest of the Commission, and the Systems Administrator must have the skills and knowledge to consult with managers and administrators from across the Commission about complex and/or critical systemwide issues.

The primary duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Configure, deploy, and troubleshoot datacenter server hardware and software. 
  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement solutions to optimize performance.   Perform software updates, handling security patches, and addressing any technical issues that may arise.  
  • Perform periodic risk assessments, including security audits, and initiate risk control strategies.  Provide training, mentoring and assistance to Help Desk Staff.
  • Provide Tier III software and hardware support as needed via telephone, email, instant message, screen share or in-person. 
  • Troubleshoot computer and server system problems, identify root causes, and implement solutions or workarounds if root causes cannot be discerned. 
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, email, anti-virus, and anti-spam. 

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required for this position: 

  • Strong analytical abilities and professional office experience
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, various operating systems, including Windows Server
  • Experience with virtualization technologies and cloud platforms 
  • Thorough knowledge of datacenter components

A bachelor's degree in information technology is strongly preferred.  Candidates who do not possess a BS in the Information Technology field but have developed substantial expertise through experience and non-degree learning may be considered. A driver's license is required.

This is a full-time position on site based at out Agawam, MA campus, and the typical hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00AM-4:30PM, although the Systems Administrator may be needed to work outside of the typical workday or work week during an emergency or scheduled systems maintenance.  The hiring salary range is $85,000-$90,000.  The Commission offers a competitive compensation package including 3 weeks of vacation, 13 paid holidays, paid sick and personal time, pension, and an affordable health/dental plan. 

The successful applicant will be required to complete a pre-employment drug test and physical as well as a pre-employment criminal background check.    Employment at the Commission is considered public sector employment and time here may be eligible for certain types of student loan forgiveness (check with your lender).
