Accounting Supervisor

Springfield, MA

The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission (Commission) is seeking an Accounting Supervisor to join its financial services team at its headquarters in Agawam, MA. Commission employees are the stewards of clean water for the lower Pioneer Valley. Our work protects public health and the environment by providing drinking water, fire protection, forest stewardship, clean rivers and streams, and wastewater treatment. This position is responsible for daily financial operations including posting to the GL and processing payroll.

The primary duties of the position include:

- Posts journal entries to the General Ledger and other accounts.

- Processes weekly payroll including journalizing all payroll related activates ((OT, incentives, spot bonuses, leave time usage, etc.).  Accurately tracks and records weekly payroll changes to audit payroll record before transmittal and initiates internal audit and approval process. 

- Verifies expenses including payroll batches and vendor check batches.

- Maintains financial controls to ensure that expenditures are kept within appropriations.

- Ensures that financial reports comply with generally accepted accounting principles or financial reporting standards.

The position requires a degree in accounting, preferably a BA/BS but an AA will be considered with appropriate relevant experience.  

The successful candidate will have at least five (5) years of successful experience in the accounting field including encumbrances, A/P, payroll and GL as well as experience using financial software.  

Municipal accounting experience is highly desirable as is experience working with external auditors.


The expected hiring range for this position is $72,000 - $78,000 (actual salary offer will depend upon experience, knowledge, and skills). The Commission may consider applicants who do not meet all of the job requirements at a modified hiring range.  The Commission offers a competitive benefits package including health insurance (with dental), paid sick, vacation, holidays and personal days.  Employees of the Commission participate in the Massachusetts PERAC pension system and years of service in a PERAC plan are transferable (subject to the rules of the Springfield Retirement Board).  


Anticipated start date is July 15, 2024.
